UPA Leagues Intensify Presence in Wyoming
3rd Annual Platte Valley Open Platform for League of Champions Expansion in Wyoming
PHOENIX, AZ (March 10, 2010) - The United States Professional Poolplayers Association's (UPA) League of Champions continues to spread across the United States like wildfire. One of the more recent states to add its players to the UPA's league roster within the past year, Wyoming. To continue to build upon the league system's platform, the Third Annual Platte Valley Open will be held April 2nd through April 4th in Saratoga, Wyoming. The $10,000 total added inaugural event will be held at Platte Valley Community Center with $7,000 added going to the Masters Division (open to all players); $2,000 to the Classic Division (Wyoming Intermediate); and $700 to the Sportsman Division (Carbon County Beginners). The entry deadline for the tournament is March 26, 2010. Only paid entry spots will be reserved. Wyoming's League Operator, Heather Curby, is looking forward to expanding the UPA throughout her state and stated recently: "We've been able to expand our League of Champions to surrounding areas. It's fun and exciting to inform the players of how the league operates and the benefits involved. My favorite aspect of the League of Champions is the rating system and how it breaks down all avenues of your game including your break, foul, and miss percentages. It offers the player input into the areas improvement might be needed as well as one's strengths. Another great tool we are able to offer is rankings with other shooters across the nation and not just in your immediate divisions. The league has definitely been a rewarding experience as an operator and I look forward to many more great seasons in the future!" Click here to find a UPA Pool League near you. |
UPA's League of Champions Heads East
PHOENIX, AZ (November 18, 2009) - The United States Professional Poolplayers Association's (UPA) League of Champions has been a hot topic for the past few months growing leaps and bounds throughout the country. The latest movement sees the league heading east with its newest territories being formed in the great states of New York, Connecticut, and further south dipping down into Arkansas. Heading up the three new leagues are: Thomas Wimler (CT); Roger Fresco (NY); and Robert Heinz (AR). Here are a few words from the Connecticut and Arkansas league operators regarding their newest regional acquisitions: "As a new UPA league operator, I am very excited and look forward to the challenge ahead. The UPA offers the most accurate handicapping system, highest cash payouts, national ranking, and statistical data to help players improve their game. The CT-UPA is not only excited for the players in the region to become a part of the UPA in this manner, but dedicated to establishing teams throughout all of Connecticut to ensure more individuals have the opportunity to do so." Thomas Wimler, League Operator Connecticut To reach the CT-UPA, visit them on the web at www.connupa.com. In Arkansas, League Operator Robert Heinz stated: "Since becoming a league operator for the UPA, I have been very impressed with how simple their system has been to use, the organization of the staff, and the UPA's willingness and efforts to help jump start my league. We have found that not only is recruiting players for the league easy due to the system in place, but the format is preferred over other league formats currently in play - it is a big hit for us!" New York is currently in the infancy stages of its league. More information concerning this region can be found on the UPA website. Keeping the ball rolling, the October monthly league drawing winner is Brian Stefl. Brian receives a new Poison AR4 cue from our official cue sponsor - Poison Cues and the Predator Group - and participates in the UPA metro Detroit league system under League Operator Shaun O'Dell. UPA League of Champions Expands Nationwide
UPA League of Champions Expands Nationwide
PHOENIX, AZ (September 2, 2009) - The United States Professional Poolplayers Association's (UPA) League of Champions has hit the ground running with sponsorships not only by top names in the industry such as Instroke Cases and Poison Cues, but local organizations namely AZ Diamondbacks and the Boys & Girls Club of Metropolitan Phoenix. The fastest growing amateur league in the nation continues to set its sights on new territories giving entrepreneurially inclined individuals the opportunity to start their own League of Champions. After the inaugural launching of the league system in Arizona and Wyoming, the most recent leagues to jump off the ground include: Tampa, Florida; Memphis, Tennessee; Detroit, Michigan; Minnesota's Tri-Cities; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Western Pennsylvania. The league owners in these areas have secured the licensing rights to ensure their leagues will remain protected in their respective territories. If you're interested in an opportunity to take charge of your regional area, contact us immediately for details.
"It has been amazing to watch the leagues grow to the extent that they have in such a short amount of time. Amateur pool has consistently lacked a tool to give players the ability and the means to improve their individual game while participating in a social environment. The UPA league system has truly provided players the vision to see that if they too work hard enough, they can realize their dreams of improving their skills and possibly even to compete in professional pool. Our league operators share in this vision and I believe that is why we continue to be the fastest growing league in the country." Darrin Brown, UPA Executive Director Last but not least, the UPA would like to congratulate Salina Holland for being our first monthly league drawing winner. Salina took home a brand new Instroke Cowboy case provided by Frank's Center. Not only is Salina a new member of the League of Champions but she is a tough competitor. We wish her all good rolls in the future! PHOENIX, AZ (July 9, 2009) - The United States Professional Poolplayers Association's (UPA) has recently launched its latest venture, a nationwide amateur league known as the League of Champions. The initial testing phase was performed in the state of Arizona, home of the UPA, and the results have provided a great starting point for the areas league operators.Running the Phoenix division of the league, Jason Bylsma and Roger Gokool, two of the original test-run members (which has become the norm of all of the directors):
"I love the UPA's brand as well as what they've created for League Operators. Its fun, challenging, and good business all wrapped up in one. I could see from the beginning they were on to something." - Jason Bylsma, League Operator, Phoenix, AZ
"The UPA amateur league is unique as all players have the opportunity to be a part of a national ranking system. The SSR has eliminated "sandbagging" and their Operator's system brings an easy way of managing our league using the corporate computerized system. I'm proud to be a part of this league." - Roger Gokool, League Operator, Phoenix, AZ
Find out what these two gentlemen are offering in their respective area by contacting them directly at www.upaphoenix.com or email upaphoenix@live.com Both Jason and Roger look forward to hearing from you.
In the Peoria and Glendale area, operators Chuck Webb and Robert Brown are running the show. Former players in the UPA's test divisions they both decided to launch the UPA's west side at www.upawestvalley.com
"I have played in every league out there today. The League of Champions system actually helps me become a better pool player and I want to help others enjoy this great league. I could see this league's potential from the beginning and that is why I've become a League Operator. We are looking forward to expanding the west valley, come out and join us!" - Chuck Webb, League Operator, Peoria, AZ
"I enjoy playing UPA leagues, mainly because the people are fun and the challenge even greater. The SSR points out my strengths and weaknesses as a player. I look forward to expansion of UPA leagues in my area and I can see this easily happening across the nation." - Robert Brown, League Operator, Glendale, AZ
And yet another participant, Don Dailey, of the UPA's original test divisions jumps on board to handle remaining cities; Mesa, Tempe, and Chandler (website forthcoming).
"I watched United Parcel Service (UPS) in its beginning years before UPS offered continuous 48 state service - I was there to experience their growth pains and challenges for twenty years. The UPA's League of Champions reminds me of the exact same opportunity. I knew from the beginning that the UPA League of Champions will be the premier amateur billiard league and I want to be a part of this organization. It's the perfect challenge for me and I look forward to a great future. - Don Dailey, League Operator, East Valley, AZ
The UPA League of Champions continues to expand rapidly and with great enthusiasm by all involved in Arizona with availability remaining in Tucson, Sedona, Flagstaff to and more cities/states forthcoming. PHOENIX, AZ (June 23, 2009) - The United States Professional Poolplayers Association (the "UPA") has come into the final phases of testing its newest collaboration and the organization is finally ready to launch its amateur league nationwide to be known as the League of Champions.
The handicapped league offers players access to professional pool on many levels using an official U.S. ranking computed by a newly developed cutting edge program called a Systematic Speed Ratio (SSR). The SSR is utilized to help determine both an individual's speed and rank against their peers nationwide. To top it off, cash and prizes are added to the package. Eventually, prizes will include entries into professional events, official products, professional instruction, tickets, and tour stop entries for your entire team, both men and women.
Whether you are a beginner wanting to become skilled at the game or already have a strong background in the billiards community, this is one occasion that you can test your knowledge using a handicapped system that will allow you to compete with the best of the best, from beginners up to professional players.
The professionals behind the league system have completely eliminated any possibility of common challenges (such as "sand bagging") which have become common place in many league settings by offering players and operators alike a technologically advanced program to maintain data on its players.
This specialized league system offers its operators an opportunity to create an entrepreneurial avenue in their backyard, while having a computerized online system that does all of the work for each operator. At this time, early bird licenses opportunities are available for those interested in turning their passions for the sport into a profitable business model.
As noted by Wyoming's Franchise Owner, E.J. Glode, "our players completely love it - the SSR provides information that coincides with your actual skill level on the pool table removing any and all guess work by league operators. In the end, it makes for great competition between our beginner and advanced players."
UPA Touring Professional Rodney Morris has thrown his name into the mix to help jump-start this new venture with a move to the west coast - Phoenix more specifically, for league promotion and further development.
"The idea to develop an amatuer league program was presented by our first president, Charlie Williams. Almost a year ago, we were approached by several parties requesting to use the UPA brand and its ideas in an amateur league and the timing couldn't have been more perfect. It's very exciting to see the players challenged by our system. We have worked very hard to develop the system from a professional perspective and we expect great things to come of it." - Rodney Morris, UPA Touring Professional
Already taking a step in the right direction by partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Phoenix, the UPA has made a substantial commitment to the youth by offering a portion of all league membership and player dues to assist the billiard fund to ultimately provide kids with an alternative to taking negative directions in life by providing a fun venue showing nothing but positive support from the community.
"In keeping with the traditions of previous presidents, we believe that our league should benefit the Boys and Girls Club. It is a direct investment in the future of our sport and most importantly the youth of our community." - Frank Alvarez III, President and Touring Professional
Instroke Cases, Magique Golf, Delta-13, and Inside Pool Magazine all jump behind the launch, while other sponsors are still being determined and will be announced soon. Interested parties need only contact the UPA.

PHOENIX, AZ (May 6th, 2008) - The United States Professional Poolplayers Association (the "UPA") has released the official and updated rankings for the United States men's professional pool scene to avoid any confusion as to which rankings are the accurate and historical rankings for the United States of America. To continue to follow the United States official point updates, visit the tour website at www.upatour.com and click on "Current Ranking" located at the top of the homepage.
After a recent press release by the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) concerning its intention to change the ranking and player communication overview procedures, the UPA stands firm as the player's association and governing body, as still recognized by the BCA, that this is not only unfounded and uncalled for, but disrespectful to the player's who have fought for this tour since its inception six years ago. The BCA has in fact, since its press release, utilized the UPA's official rankings to establish their unofficial "BCA Points List" providing more cause to dispute their reasoning behind this change of practice in the first place; and in the process has offered a points list that has included numerous inaccuracies that pose irrevocable damage to the members of the tour in various aspects of their lives as Touring Professionals.
"We find it quite odd that this new point system actually uses our own tour rankings and yet subtly changes the point distribution of our last event. As an association, we find it deeply troubling that those who oversee the BCA rankings would use our rankings in an attempt to 'overthrow' our player created and approved system. It is obvious to our players that this is merely an attempt to 'wean' the industry from the UPA Tour's rankings. Our rankings will remain intact and we will do our best to help clarify the confusion that the BCA has contributed by using their imposed point structure." - Frank Alvarez, UPA President
The events of the recent days have caused a chain reaction by the players to demand that their names be removed from the BCA point list immediately, some of their comments are as follows:
"I am not requesting that my name be removed from the new 'rankings' posted by the BCA, I am demanding it. I want nothing to do with the BCA points list and will be contacting all involved to have my name removed. We players have several ways in which we intend to deal with these "pseudo" rankings and this is just the beginning. You can bet as players come to realize the full ramifications of this point list, more players will follow. This has hurt both American and international players of our tour." - Rodney Morris, UPA Lead Player Representative
"Our rankings were created by the players, for the players. In the BCA's new 'rankings' they have the number one U.S. player, Johnny Archer, ranked fourth and 300 points below the new point leader. The UPA is a player owned tour and I have to wonder if the people who are doing this realize that. I want my name removed from this new list posted by the BCA and I urge every player who competes in U.S. do the same. - Shawn Putnam, UPA Touring Professional
"I would like to notify the BCA and those involved in the development of this point list that you are directly damaging the livelihood of United States Touring Professionals. You have no right to change my ranking or change the rules by which my rankings are applied. Thank you for respecting my wishes by removing my name from your points list - you do not have the right to use my name." - Charlie Bryant, UPA Touring Professional

PHOENIX, AZ (May 5th, 2008) - The United States Professional Poolplayers Association (the "UPA") announced today that the organization and its players plan to take a stand against the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) effective immediately due to its "medaling" within the United States men's professional pool scene.
The UPA, as an organization, officially received word just hours ago that a press release was being provided to media from the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) concerning a change in ranking and player communication overview. In the press release by the BCA, it stated that the decision to "manage the men's professional rankings system and player communications duties" was to be performed by the BCA.
The President of the UPA, Frank Alvarez, commented that "it is regrettable that I was only informed of this hours before the release. I sit on the BCA/WPA committee and this topic somehow was not presented to the very player's association that is directly involved. The UPA is officially recognized by the BCA as the 'governing body' and yet we were not consulted on this matter nor informed by the BCA of any such release. Obviously, we will need time to get to the heart of the matter and deal with it properly. The BCA is a trade organization and not a player's association so this not only undermines, but underestimates the wishes of our Touring Professionals. It is apparent that the UPA membership as a whole is not being treated equally or with the same respect as its counter part the Women's Professional Billiard Association (WPBA). Understandably, the player's are outraged and we believe this matter will do nothing but impair U.S. pool if not resolved in the near future. It is my position that the will of the UPA is simply the will of the players."
In response to both the BCA's recent decision and the behavior of the WPA, effective immediately, UPA players will not plan to attend the 2008 Qatar World Open 9-Ball Championships currently scheduled for June 27-July 5, 2008.
Some of the top names in the men's professional pool scene have provided statements on this issue as follows:
"I take it as a personal offense that any association would seek to undermine our ranking system. We are the players in the U.S. and I will support my country's association. If the WPA wants American players, then I am certain that we will be shown the respect that we deserve from WPA representatives." - Rodney Morris, UPA Lead Representative
"This is our tour and our ranking system. No one has the right to take this away from us. Honestly, I am shocked and disappointed that we are treated with such disrespect." - Tony Robles, UPA Representative
"In my opinion, we have the strongest ranking system in the world and we are not about to let that go." - Tony Crosby, UPA Representative
"I'm in full support of the UPA - I believe in what it stands for and that the power should be in the hands of our player association." - Shane Van Boening, UPA Touring Professional

PHOENIX, AZ –The United States Professional Pool Players Association (the “UPA”) has recently partnered with ExecutiveBilliards.com to take on the DELTA-13 Ball Rack as the tour’s official rack.
RJD Machining is a highly respected manufacturing company in Colorado, who has been producing high tolerance aerospace and medical device components for the past twenty years. They have now taken their knowledge and experience to new frontiers by “revolutionizing the billiard industry.” They have developed a “state of the art” 100% aluminum ball rack which ensures that it will not warp, splinter, bend or bow. In addition, it weighs only 16 ounces and features an ergonomically designed pocket grip for more controlled and accurate placement and separation. Each corner is machined to sixty degrees, holding a tolerance of +/- 2 minutes, to ensure the tightest, most accurate rack on the market. Each rack is permanently colored using a process called anodizing, giving the triangle a very durable and unique finish – color choices include gold, black, red or blue. Another fantastic option is the ability to personalize the rack by engraving the rails with names, logos, and special occasions – perfect for tournament champions! In short, the quality is superb and establishes a new standard for amateur and professionals alike.
President of RJD Machining, Terry A. Taggart, stated “It's an honor to have our product endorsed by the UPA! This is a very impressive organization. They are really focused on quality products and what is best for advancing the billiard industry.”
President of the UPA, Frank Alvarez, continued “The DELTA-13 is exactly what our touring professionals demand and we look forward to future products from RJD to hit the market.”
